I think this sums up the call for action on torture that I believe is so very important. Torture is not just in practice in Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay, but it is also used here at home. The point I really want to stress is that how can we expect the U.S. government to end the use of torture abroad when it is a practice here at home, which violates the eighth amendment to the constitution.
There will be more on torture when Steven and I give the talk we gave at the CANference on December 2. DON'T MISS IT!!!

And it is important to note that torture is far more than just a way of getting information - it is an incredibly effective way to terrify a population into compliance, as was seen in Chile under Pinochet, and throughout the "Southern Cone" in Latin America under the brutal Juntas of the 70s and 80s.
It is also used by guards who are just bored, such as in a prison in California where the guards were shooting random prisoners for no reason. Even though this may not be thought of as torture, because torture is usually seen as something drawn-out, it was because it is inhumane.
